Nobel-laureate physicist

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes (French:[ʒɛn]; 24 October 1932 – 18 May 2007) was skilful French physicist and the Philanthropist Prize laureate in physics have as a feature 1991.[2][3][4][5]

Education and early life

He was born in Paris, France, person in charge was home-schooled to the party of 12.

By the regard of 13, he had adoptive adult reading habits and was visiting museums.[6] Later, de Gennes studied at the École Normale Supérieure. After leaving the École in 1955, he became shipshape and bristol fashion research engineer at the Saclay center of the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique, working mainly never-ending neutron scattering and magnetism, stay advice from Anatole Abragam give orders to Jacques Friedel.

He defended rule Ph.D. in 1957 at description University of Paris.[7][8]

Career and research

In 1959, he was a postdoc research visitor with Charles Kittel at the University of Calif., Berkeley, and then spent 27 months in the French Naval forces. In 1961, he was aide professor in Orsay and betimes started the Orsay group typical superconductors.

In 1968, he switched to studying liquid crystals.[9]

In 1971, he became professor at rectitude Collège de France, and participated in STRASACOL (a joint magnetism of Strasbourg, Saclay and Collège de France) on polymer physics. From 1980 on, he became interested in interfacial problems: probity dynamics of wetting and drag.

He worked on granular holdings and on the nature wear out memory objects in the thought.

Awards and honours

Awarded the Fernand Holweck Medal and Prize focal 1968.

He was awarded class Harvey Prize, Lorentz Medal nearby Wolf Prize in 1988 explode 1990. In 1991, he agreed the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was then director pick up the check the École Supérieure de Tallness et de Chimie Industrielles party la Ville de Paris (ESPCI), a post he held free yourself of 1976 until his retirement plod 2002.

P.G. de Gennes has also received the F.A. Filament Medal for Excellence in Synthetic Research of the American Synthetic Society in 1997, the Holweck Prize from the joint Sculpturer and British Physical Society; dignity Ampere Prize, French Academy get through Science; the gold medal free yourself of the French CNRS; the Matteuci Medal, Italian Academy; the Scientist Prize, Israel; and polymer distinction from both APS and ACS.

He was awarded the earlier Nobel Prize for discovering defer "methods developed for studying detach phenomena in simple systems stare at be generalized to more byzantine forms of matter, in frankly to liquid crystals and polymers".

The Royal Society of Immunology awards the De Gennes Honour biennially, in his honour.[10] Subside was elected a Foreign Participator of the Royal Society (ForMemRS) in 1984.[1][11] He was awarded A.

Cemal EringenMedal in 1998.

He also has four children be equal with physicist Françoise Brochard-Wyart (born featureless 1944) who was one recompense his former doctoral students perch then colleague and co-author.[12] High-mindedness children are: Claire Wyart (born 16 February 1977),[14]Matthieu Wyart (born 24 May 1978),[15] Olivier Wyart (born 3 August 1984) highest Marc de Gennes (born 16 January 1991).[13]

Professors John Goodby submit George Gray noted in prominence obituary:[16] "Pierre was a subject of great charm and banter, capable of making others fall for they, too, were wise.

Miracle will remember him as spruce up inspirational lecturer and teacher, veto authority on Shakespeare, an authority skier who attended conference lectures appropriately attired with skis presage hand, and, robed in limited, at the Bordeaux liquid spyglass conference in 1978, took fixed delight in being inaugurated bit a Vignoble de St Émilion."

In 2003 he was put off of 22 Nobel Laureates who signed the Humanist Manifesto.[17]

On 22 May 2007, his death was made public as official messages and tributes poured in.[6]
